Early Life
Cillian Murphy was born on May 25, 1976, in Douglas, County Cork, Ireland. He grew up in Ballintemple, Cork. His father worked for the Irish Department of Education, and his mother taught French. By the time he was ten, Murphy was already writing songs and playing music.
He attended Presentation Brothers College, a Catholic school. He did well in his studies but often got into trouble. At that school, he acted in a play for the first time. His English teacher, the writer William Wall, saw his talent and encouraged him to consider acting as a career.
However, Murphy wanted to be a musician. He sang and played guitar in a band with his brother. They loved the Beatles and Frank Zappa, and they named their band The Sons of Mr. Greenjeans. A record label called Acid Jazz Records offered him a five-album deal, but they turned it down. Murphy later said he was glad they didn’t sign him.
In 1996, Murphy began studying law at University College Cork. But he failed his first-year exams because he spent more time on his band than on his classes. While at college, he starred in two plays: Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme and Little Shop of Horrors.

In 2002, The Irish Times praised him. Author Fintan O’Toole wrote about Murphy’s performance as Adam in Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things. That same year, Murphy played the lead role in the horror film 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle.
Murphy went on to star in several hit films, including The Dark Knight series. He also became known for his role as Thomas Shelby in the BBC show Peaky Blinders.

People also talked a lot about “Barbenheimer” — a viral trend that came about because Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on the same day.
