John attended Afton High School, where he acted in plays and played football as both an offensive guard and a defensive tackle. He finished school in 1970, then waited a year before enrolling at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) on a football scholarship. But an injury ended his dream of playing football for a living, so he chose theater instead. He studied acting with Kathleen Turner and Tess Harper, who later received Oscar nominations. John received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1975. In 2013, the school awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Early Career And Roseanne & Film career

Goodman attended Southwest Missouri State University on a football scholarship. But he was injured, and his plans to play football were derailed. So, he began studying drama. After he was knocked unconscious in 1975, he moved to New York City to find acting work. At first, he worked in small dinner theaters and did TV commercials. In 1979, he starred in the Broadway show Loose Ends. A few years later, he starred again on Broadway in Big River (1985), where he played Huck Finn’s father – a role that caught his attention.

Goodman began acting in films in the early 1980s. In 1987, he played a fugitive convict in the Coen Brothers comedy film Rising Arizona. But his big break came when he landed the role of a regular working father on the popular TV show Roseanne. His performance on the show earned him seven Emmy nominations, and he also won a Golden Globe in 1993.

Personal Life

Personal life John married Annabeth Hartzog on October 27, 1989, and their daughter Molly was born on August 31, 1990. Molly then worked in the entertainment industry. She worked as an assistant on the Fox comedy show “New Girl” and the NBC crime show “Aquarius.” She also produced and edited a short film called “A Love Saga with John Goodman.” John had problems with drinking and cocaine use, but he stayed clean after getting help at the Promise Treatment Center in Malibu in 2007.
