Kalidhar Lapata Story
The film tells the story of Kalidhar (Abhishek Bachchan), a man in his late forties or early fifties who discovers that he has early stages of Alzheimer’s. His brothers do not support him. They start considering him a problem and hatch a cold plan to leave him alone at the Kumbh Mela. Kali overhears their plan. He becomes sad and broken, so he goes his own way. Fate takes him to Bhojpur, where he meets a smart and bold boy named Ballu (Davik Baghela). At first, they argue a lot, but slowly they form a strong and sweet bond. Ballu listens to Kali’s stories and makes a list to help him fulfill his old dreams. They go on a journey filled with fun, learning, healing and finally goodbye. But Kali also has to hide from a wandering stall officer, who is sent by his family to find him. This brings some anxiety and haste to their happy journey. What Kali chooses in the end, and how she finds herself again, makes the second half very emotional. And trust me – some parts of the film will touch you and stay with you even after the film is over.
Plus Points
It’s easy for Indians to enjoy life movies, and this one fits that genre well. It doesn’t try to do anything big or new, but the movie has nice moments that will make you smile, laugh and even feel a little sad. That simple emotion is what makes Madhumita’s work strong, and it keeps it soft and real.
Abhishek Bachchan does a good job as Kalidhar. He doesn’t overdo it and stays as the role requires. He gives a simple performance. In the sad scenes, he shows some deep emotions and makes Kalidhar real.
But the heart of the movie is Daivik Baghela, who plays Ballu. He comes across as determined, calm and easily likable. He gets a lot of screen time in the movie and his calm and clear acting makes every scene good.
The parts with Kalidhar and Ballu are the best. Their first conversation, the dreams that Kalidhar never lived, and the goodbye talk – all feel real and soft. These scenes give the film its true feel.
The lines of the film are also great. They seem easily understandable and ordinary, but they still go deep and stay in your mind.
Minus Points
Kalidhar Lapta looks good and is calm with the emotions, but he doesn’t introduce anything new to the story. The plot is easy to guess, and the scenes go in a straight line without any major surprises. The director wants to make a good film without drama or big twists, but the middle part feels slow and should have been shorter.
The ending is where the film gets a bit lost. It feels safe and familiar in the emotions, but it doesn’t give the strong feeling it should have given. Mainly for both the lead roles, a good ending could have given more emotional value to the audience.
Abhishek has acted hard, but the role needed deeper emotions. He is okay, but another actor with more depth could have shown more in Kalidhar. Nimrat Kaur as Meera and some other supporting roles don’t get enough space to stay in the mind.
