It’s been almost 30 years since the 1996 adaptation of the 1966 television series “Mission: Impossible” hit theaters. Directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise, the film was a huge success and launched a franchise that has been so successful that more than two decades later, MI films are still being released.

When the first film came out, I was so excited to see it that I borrowed a VHS tape from my neighbor. Flash-forward to 2000, and I made it my mission to see the sequel, MI2, at the box office. After being directed by De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird as Hot Potato, Christopher McQuarrie directed the next four films, starting with Rogue Nation. The eighth entry in the series, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, will be released in theaters in May 2025.

If you’ve made it your mission to watch the entire Mission: Impossible franchise or at least a few of the films – here’s where you can stream each film for an adrenaline-filled romp.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Review and Story

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Plot

After ten Mission: Impossible films, it’s no surprise that Ethan Hunt is once again saving the world. In the latest and supposedly final chapter, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise’s daring hero picks up right where 2023’s Dead Reckoning left off. The film picks up again with Ethan racing against time to stop a nearly unstoppable artificial intelligence known as The Entity an all-powerful digital force that has hijacked cyberspace and threatens to plunge the world into nuclear chaos. Now holding the key to its destruction, Ethan travels across continents to stop it before it falls into the wrong hands. And, against all odds, when the mission ends, the world feels as if… right, the digital apocalypse was never on the table.

What’s surprising is that the film repeatedly warns that destroying The Entity will bring down the internet and possibly destroy the global economy. Sure, it’s better than raining down nuclear bombs, but it still feels devastating. So why does everything seem normal in the end?

In “Dead Reckoning,” the major powers are scrambling to find two special cruciform keys designed to unlock “The Entity’s” source code and give it complete control. The A.I. is already so deeply embedded in global networks that it can manipulate reality and truth itself. The U.S. wants control, but Ethan disagrees and goes rogue, believing that no nation or individual should wield that kind of unchecked power.

“The Final Reckoning” takes a new turn. President Sloane (Angela Bassett) warns that taking down “The Entity” means taking down the digital world. But as it is, most of the government is already offline, relying on analog systems because digital systems can’t be trusted. Grace (Haley Atwell), now on Ethan’s side, also argues that he should take control of “The Entity” rather than kill it claiming that she’s the only person who can reverse its chaos. But Ethan sticks to his guns: it has to be destroyed.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Movie Review

Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the latest – and perhaps final – entry in the long-running MI saga. Led by 62-year-old Tom Cruise, Final Reckoning once again delivers the high-octane action, tense espionage and apocalyptic suspense that the franchise has come to expect for nearly three decades.

After the chaos of Dead Reckoning, Ethan Hunt is now off the grid, his fans chasing him. An elusive AI force known as The Entity is plunging the world into chaos. Digital content cannot be trusted, and anything connected to the internet is being compromised. The real threat lies in the Entity’s creeping influence on the nuclear control systems of global superpowers. Hunt holds the key to the AI’s root drive – the back door to its master code, which can shut it down.

The threat? Disabling or destroying it could destabilize the world’s economic and social fabric. But allowing a major nation to claim control over it could be even worse. Ethan doesn’t believe anyone should hold such unchecked power. With time running out and the stakes skyrocketing, he and his loyal team must move quickly to prevent destruction. Faced with impossible choices, Ethan must weigh trust, loyalty, and sacrifice knowing that each option could lead to global collapse.

Final Reckoning features jaw-dropping action, epic set pieces, stunning cinematography, and a powerhouse cast that mirrors Dead Reckoning’s. But like previous installments, it has a few flaws that could leave audiences confused or frustrated as the story progresses.
