Filmmaker James Gunn recently shared his thoughts on Matt Reeves’ upcoming film, The Batman Part II, while attending the premiere of his own film, Superman. He said he had read the highly anticipated script and was very impressed with it, expressing excitement about what Reeves has planned next.

The sequel to The Batman was officially announced in April 2022, shortly after the first film hit theaters on March 4. The film featured a strong cast, including Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcon, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Andy Serkis as Alfred. Many of these characters are expected to return, although full details are being kept under wraps.

The news of the completed script comes as Gunn and Peter Safran prepare to launch a new DC Universe with their new Superman film. Previously, when fans questioned the delay in the sequel’s script, Gunn told them to stay calm and trust the process, adding his usual personal touch in response.

Plot

On Halloween night, someone kills Gotham Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. (Rupert Penry-Jones). The killer wears a mask and calls himself the Riddler (Paul Dano). He used to be a forensic accountant but now targets the powerful in Gotham. He says he wants to show the real truth about the city. He leaves the puzzles behind and streams his crimes online. Mitchell is running for mayor again and says that the drug bust of Salvatore Maroni has done a lot of damage to organized crime. After his murder, Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), who is secretly working as Batman, begins to help the police. He has only been Batman for two years and is still learning. He works closely with GCPD officer James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), the only police officer he trusts. They also find a note from the Riddler and a USB drive with the mayor’s thumbprint in Mitchell’s car.

Batman and Gordon discover that the USB contains photos of Mitchell and a woman named Annika Kosolov (Hana Hrzyk) at a nightclub run by the Penguin (Colin Farrell), who works for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). These photos are sent to all the news media. That night, the Riddler kills Commissioner Pete Savage and leaves another note. Batman visits the club again and sees Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), Annika’s friend and roommate who works as a waitress. He follows her and sees her stealing Annika’s passport from the Penguin’s safe. They go to her apartment, but Annika is missing. Batman sends Selina back to the club to find out more. She learns that Savage, Mitchell, and DA Gil Coulson (Peter Sarsgaard) were all paid by Falcon. Later, the Riddler kidnaps Coulson and plants a bomb around his neck. Coulson shows up at Mitchell’s funeral, and the Riddler calls Batman. He tells Coulson to answer the riddles or the bomb will go off. Coulson dies because he does not reveal the name of the person who gave the police information about Maroni. He says that he will die anyway and does not want to put his family in danger. Batman and Gordon then think that the Penguin may be the informant and pursue him in a drug deal. They learn that Falcon, not Maroni, is now running the drug business and that the police are working for him. Selina appears and finds Annika’s body.

The Penguin says he is not a rat and hints that “El Rata Erada” could be Batman himself. Batman and Gordon then go to an old orphanage that Bruce’s parents once funded. They learn that the Riddler lived there and hates him for getting rich while Bruce was suffering. Bruce rushes home, but Alfred (Andy Serkis) is injured by a bomb sent to him. The Riddler posts evidence that Thomas Wayne asked Falcon to deal with a reporter who wanted to expose Martha Wayne’s mental health history. Bruce meets Falcon, who says he helped Thomas by killing the reporter. Alfred then tells Bruce that Thomas never intended to kill the reporter and planned to hand Falcon over after learning of the murder. Alfred believes that Falcon killed Thomas and Martha. Selina then tells Batman that Falcon is her father and that he killed Annika to hide the truth. Selina wants to kill Falcon, but Batman stops her. She takes Falcon outside to the police, but the Riddler shoots and kills him. The police capture the Riddler, whose real name is Edward Nashton. He tells Batman that he was inspired by him and thought they were working together. Batman is furious and says that they are not the same.

Batman looks around the Riddler’s place and finds a map under the rug. It shows where the Riddler is planting bombs around Gotham. Shortly after, a bomb explodes and the city’s sea wall collapses, flooding everything. People gather for safety at Gotham Square, where new Mayor Bella Real is giving a speech. Riddler’s online fans appear and try to kill him. Batman and Selina fight them. One nearly kills Batman, but Selina saves him. Then a man tries to stab Selina, and Batman confronts him with a shot of adrenaline. He stops the last attacker. Batman sees a live electrical wire falling into the water where the people are standing. He jumps on it and cuts it in time, shocked. He falls, but gets up, lights a flame, and leads the people to safety. Returning to Arkham, the Riddler is saddened by the failure of his plan. Another prisoner nearby tells him a riddle: “The less you know about me, the more valuable I am.” The Riddler replies, “A friend,” and they both laugh. Selina tells Batman that the city cannot be saved and wants him to leave with her, but he says no. They ride together until they part ways at a fork in the road. Selina goes one way, and Batman rides the other, watching her disappear in his mirror.

Will Robert Pattinson return as Batman?

Robert Pattinson played a dark and serious Batman when the movie came out in March 2022. His version of Bruce Wayne felt more real and grounded. People liked the film for its strong look and mood. Pattinson’s role got good feedback, and fans liked this new side of Gotham.

There’s no official news about the cast yet. But most people think Pattinson will come back. Fans also want the same team to work on the next part. This new film won’t be part of James Gunn’s DC Universe. It will stay under the DC Elseworlds name, which means it’s separate from the other new movies like Superman.

Director Matt Reeves still has control of the story. He doesn’t need to mix it with other films. Things were quiet for a long time, but now there’s progress. The story is ready, and the plan is clear. The movie will take time, and 2027 is still far. But fans now know Gotham will come back. Reeves is leading the way again.

Matt Reeves has provided an update on The Batman Part II

Matt Reeves has finally shared a new update about The Batman Part II. He kept quiet for a long time, but now he has confirmed that the sequel is in the works. Fans have been waiting for this news for a long time, and now they know that the film is moving forward.

They first talked about the sequel in April 2022. But after that, nothing much came out. Many delays and rumors have confused fans. Now, with this update, fans can be sure that the film is on its way.

The team has set a release date for October 1, 2027. That means fans will be waiting more than five years after the first part. That’s a long time, but now people know when to expect it, and they are ready to wait.

The Batman Reeves on script

Reeves shared an update about the script for the second film in his Batman trilogy. He said the writing is moving slowly, and they’re still working on finishing it.

“We’re finishing the script. We’ll start shooting next year,” Reeves said in a recent Directors on Directors chat with Variety.

Robert Pattinson will return, and Colin Farrell will be back as Oswald “Oz” Cobb, also known as The Penguin. There’s still a question about Zoe Kravitz coming back as Catwoman. In the last film, her character Selina Kyle left Gotham after getting revenge on her father, Carmine Falcone. She got a small mention in The Penguin series, which might mean she could return in the future.

This Batman feels simpler and stronger.

Matt Reeves doesn’t try to give us a completely new or personal version of Batman. Instead, he shows us a story that feels like a comic book you’d find in a store today. He doesn’t try too hard to be different – he just focuses on telling a clear Batman story that feels real and familiar. Of all the Batman films that have come before, this one is the closest to what comics feel like today.

The film is almost three hours long, so the story takes its time. Many characters appear in the first hour, and as the plot deepens, their stories don’t connect easily – they collide with each other. Big twists appear but are quickly undone or forgotten, so they don’t leave much of an impression. Just when you expect things to make sense, the relationships between people become more confusing. The film tries to do too much at once, and that makes the story a bit messy.

Still, fans will find plenty to enjoy. Jeffrey Wright plays Jim Gordon, who helps the story progress by reading the Riddler’s clues out loud, almost like reading a book to children. Zoe Kravitz plays Catwoman, who is a mix of charm and anger but needs someone to keep her from going too far. Colin Farrell plays the Penguin, and he feels like a classic mob boss – a bit like De Niro’s Al Capone. Gotham City, designed by James Chinlund, has dark and gothic buildings, but it also feels real and used – not fake like the old Burton or Schumacher films.
